Oliver’s Ait

Tales from the towpath – Oliver’s Ait. Winter and late summer views.

Oliver’s Ait is a small island on the River Thames between Kew Rail and Kew Road Bridges at Strand-on-the-Green, owned by the Port of London Authority. Oliver Cromwell was supposed to have hidden here at one point during the English Civil War, apparently giving the island its name.  It was also the site of a barge to collect tolls, controlled by the Corporation of the City of London, hence the City Barge Pub opposite.
